We first need to make sure your school computer has the necessary programs installed.
NOTE: You will have to arrange for someone from the district with an administrative password to log on to your computer to download and install the programs below.
PART 1: Get Firefox.
Firefox is the Web browser of choice for this course, as many of the tools we will explore just seem to run more smoothly in Firefox. Firefox itself is a "Web 2.0" browser - open source (free to use and build upon), with lots of great features -- one of the best of which is TABBED browsing, which means you can open up several web pages at once INSIDE one browser window, and switch between them using tabs -- as opposed to them piling up on your taskbar. (See video below -- tabs are the greatest browser innovation EVER). Make sure you have Java and Flash installed for Firefox as well.
PART 2: Add Delicious buttons to Firefox.
By adding the Delicious buttons to Firefox, you'll be able to add sites to your Delicious bookmarks with a single click. This means, you'll simply click the Delicious tool while you are viewing online content you want to bookmark--rather than going to the Delicious website and bookmarking it manually. Much simpler!
PART 3: Track your 21Things progress.
I've shared a Google Doc with each of you. It allows you to access the community spreadsheet where we'll track our progress. You should have received an email (with a link to the document), inviting you to view and edit the document. Please visit the spreadsheet and verify your name is on it and that the information is correct. If you need to make changes, do so and save the document. As you complete each "thing," add an X to the appropriate to signify you have completed that particular "thing."
